Standard Course on Computational Geotechnics

Aug 23
  • Title: Standard Course on Computational Geotechnics
  • Date: August 23, 2010
  • Till: August 25, 2010
  • Location: Pretoria, South Africa
  • Leader: Dennis Waterman
  • Organisers: SAICE and Plaxis bv

This standard course in South Africa follows the format of the Standard Courses given yearly in many locations all over the world. The Standard Courses are well attended by participants from consulting and contracting companies, public work bodies and universities. The course consists of a balanced mixture of lectures and hands-on computer analyses. The lectures focus on both on soil behaviour and advanced methods in geotechnical engineering as well as on the use of the Plaxis programs. The differen topics of the course are illustrated by practical case studies, for instance of embankments and deep excavations. This way, the course offers an introduction to the modelling of geotechnical problems that are encountered in day-to-day engineering practice. The computer exercises are performed with the Plaxis 2D V9 code. As a consequence of the easy program operation, teaching and tutoring will focus on geotechnical aspects, which allows for the short course format of three days.

Venue: University of Pretoria, Faculty of Engineering
