- Job description
Problem definition:
The current mesh generator is used in the PLAXIS 2D program as well as the PLAXIS 3D program. It is based on the SEPRAN mesh generator developed by “Ingenieursbureau SEPRA”. For the 2D program, 3-noded, 6-noded or 15-noded triangles are created, whereas for the 3D program 10-noded tetrahedral elements are created. To improve the meshing procedure, evaluation of capabilities of the current meshing procedure in comparison with other available meshing procedures should be performed. This research project gives the oppertunity to apply reasearch to a practical case, allowing you to combine your theoretical and practical knowledge. You will be working at a growing high-tech company in computational geotechnics, focused on developing, marketing, and supporting the Plaxis finite element software for soil and rock analyses. Universities, governmental institutes, engineering consulting firms and large contractors all over the world are using PLAXIS software in the engineering and design of prestigious projects, such as foundations of highrise buildings, complex tunnels, large dams and deep offshore foundations.
Project goals:
This project comprises an evaluation of current available mesh generators, like e.g. NetGen, meshing algorithms and data structures. The study should take into account the features of the current mesh generator (i.e. internal points, lines, surfaces and interfaces), interaction of the mesh generator with the GUI, the quality and speed of the whole meshing procedure, possibility to deal with parametric surfaces and it should be easy to maintain, to extend and to learn. To compare different solutions, a set of testcases should be defined like simple projects, projects with a large number of entities, projects with small entities (e.g. small volumes) and projects in which the mesh coarseness is too large for the geometry. The result of the comparative study will be a list of recommendations for improving the meshing procedure of the PLAXIS software.
